Quakes hit Amol in Mazandaran and Poledokhtar in Lorestan

Tremor shakes Amol in Mazandaran province

Sari, Mazandaran Prov, Sept 1, IRNA -- A tremor measuring 3.4 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale jolted the district of Baijan, south of the city of Amol, in this northern province on Sunday morning, the provincial seismological network reported here on Sunday.

According to the network, the tremor occurred at 03:10 hours local time on Sunday (22:40 GMT on Saturday).

The epicenter of the quake was reported to be in the district of Baijan, 55 km south of the city of Amol, the seismological network further said.

No report has yet been received on any casualty or material damage that may have been caused by the quake that hit this province beside the Caspian Sea.

Iran lies in the world's so-called "earthquake belt" and receives a number of tremors of varying intensities every year.

In 1990, a seven-plus degree earthquake hit another Caspian province, Gilan, neighboring Mazandaran province, as well as the northwestern province of Zanjan during which thousands of people in the two provinces died.

Quake hits Poledokhtar in Lorestan province

Khorramabad, Lorestan prov., Sept 2, IRNA -- An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the open-ended Richter scale jolted Poledokhtar, Lorestan province, at 09:03 hrs. local time (04:33 GMT) on Sunday morning.

The Seismography Center at Tehran University's Geophysics Institute said the epicenter of the tremor was located north west of Poledokhtar.

No reports on probable death tolls or injured people have been so far been reported.
