Tehran, Dec 18, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Wednesday
that his office is not implicated in the case related to the polling
institutes.
Responding to a question posed by reporters at the parliament,
President Khatami said that there is a possibility that an evidence
emerge from somewhere. The case should be examined in line with
justice, he said adding that politicization of the case should be
avoided.
The president said that he followed up the case to make sure that
the proceedings would be held in accordance with the law.
He criticized the newspapers which launch propaganda campaign
against government institutes.
"I'm very sorry that the newspapers are raising controversy over a
charge that is still under investigation by the court and no verdict
has been issued on the case. Such way of conduct misleads public
opinion making a defendant falsely a convict." he said.
He said in reply to another reporter that he believes that the
charge should not be politicized and the proceedings would be held
by upholding justice.
"The pollsters whose charge has not been proved should not be
depicted as convict. Other issues should not influence the proceedings
and the case should not be exploited for political ends," the
president said.
A reporter said that it seems that the United States wants to
apply the scenario of Iraq to Iran, the president replied that the
US claims about Iranian nuclear activities are totally baseless.
Iran is working under the supervision of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT) and does not seek nuclear arms, the president said.
"What our region needs is security and stability. Solidarity among
regional governments will help stability in the region while the
entire world is exposed to a serious threat," he said.
Asked about 'a looming political tremor', he said, "I don't know
what you mean by the looming political tremor."
