Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA -- Based on an opinion poll conducted here
recently on relations between Tehran, the European Union (EU) and the
United States, 74.7 percent of the citizens favored negotiations with
the US while 17.5 percent were opposed to it.
The poll was conducted by three Iranian institutes and the
respondents were made up of Tehrani citizens above 15 years of age.
Meanwhile, 64.5 percent of the citizens favored resumption of
talks between Iran and the US and 24 percent opposed it.
Some 60.3 percent of those questioned believed that without
diplomatic ties with the US, economic relations cannot improve.
The opinion poll showed that 26.1 percent considered the US
policies on Iran as wrong and 13.1 percent considered Iran's policies
vis-a-vis the US as so.
According to the poll, 45.8 percent of the people believed US
policies on Iran are to some extent correct, whereas 41.7 percent
others believed the same for Iran's policies towards the US.
Some 74.7 percent of the citizens considered that at a time when
one can prevent certain animosity and threats from the US through
dialogue, such a step should be taken.
Some 68.5 percent of the people believed that talks would not lead
to humiliation for the Iranians, while 79.1 percent contended that
despite the absence of relations between Iran and the US, they should
hold talks and understand each other.
Meanwhile, 65 percent of the respondents opposed the EU's
precondition that Iran should join the US-led anti-terrorism coalition
and 18.5 percent favored it.
Furthermore, 70.4 percent of those asked do not considered the US
administration reliable.
Some 62 percent of the people do not believe that the US
government is sincere in its terrorism campaign while 65.6 percent do
not believe in Washington's sincerity in defending democracy and
freedom.
Some 55.8 percent of the public oppose the view that the US
government is striving for the economic prosperity of other countries.
As for relations between Iran and the EU, 80.9 percent of those
polled believe in upgrading the ties, 7.1 percent favor continuation
of the ongoing level of relations and 3.3 percent call for restricting
the ties.
Some 86.7 percent of the people opposed the EU precondition that
Iran should observe human rights. 4.6 percent, however, opposed
setting the precondition.
In the opinion poll, 71.4 percent of the citizens opposed the EU
condition that Iran should agree to Israel's existence while 14.4
percent agreed to this condition.
Some 44.6 percent opposed the EU precondition that Iran should
not have unconventional weapons of mass destruction and 41.8 percent
favored it.
In one of the pollings half of those polled were male, while in
two other cases the male subjects were more than the female ones. More
than 60 percent of the people were married and within the 32 to 35
age group on average. Those holding high school diplomas constituted
a major portion of those polled.
Meanwhile, based on an opinion poll conducted on 2,600 citizens by
IRNA in September this year, the US likely attack on Iraq had been the
most important event this summer in their opinion.
