Tehran, Sept 26, IRNA -- An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the open-ended
Richter scale shook Masjed-Sleyman township in west side of Iran, near
the country's border with Iraq, on early hours of Thursday morning.
According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute
affiliated to the Tehran University, the quake was registered at
1:58:16 local time (2228 GMT).
There has been no news on the number of casualties or the amount
of possible damages of the quake yet.
Iran sits on some of the world's seismic faultlines and is often
shaken by earthquakes of various intensities.
As of 1991, over 950 earthquakes have hit the country resulting
in the death of 17,600 people and injuries to 53,300 others, according
to reports.
5 were injured in Masjed-Soleyman quake: Official
Ahvaz, Khuzestan Prov, Sept 26, IRNA -- Five people have been
injured as a result of a 5.5-degree earthquake which shook the city
of Masjed-Soleyman in this southwestern province early Thursday
morning, it was announced here on Thursday.
Javad Daghlavi, managing director of the provincial Red Crescent
Society, told IRNA that the residential units in nine villages
in the vicinity of Masjed-Soleyman have also suffered damage
between 30 and 40 percent.
No loss of life has yet been reported by the local officials,
he said adding that the injured have been given out-patient
treatment. Some 30 heads of cattle have also perished in the
quake, the official added.
The relief teams arrived in the region shortly after the quake and
are offering emergency help to the affected people, he said.
According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute
of Tehran University the quake occurred at 01:58 hours local
time Thursday morning (22:28 GMT Wednesday).
