An earthquake measuring 5.5 degrees on the
open-ended Richter scale jolted the cities of Zahedan and Nosratabad
in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan on Monday
morning, IRNA reported.
The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute affiliated to
Tehran University said the tremor was epicentered in an area 90
kilometers southwest of Nosratabad, in the border of Sistan and
Baluchestan and Kerman provinces.
The quake occurred at 07:30 hours local time (03:00 GMT).
the secretary of the Natural Disasters Headquarters of Sistan and
Baluchestan province, Hojjatali Shayanfar, told IRNA that the quake
caused no casualty or damage as it occurred in a desert.
Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic
faultlines and quakes of varying magnitudes are usual occurrences.
Since 1991, over 950 earthquakes have hit the country resulting in
17,600 deaths and 53,300 injuries.
Quake jolts southern Iranian city of Bam
An earthquake measuring 5.5 degrees on the

province of Kerman, on Monday morning.
The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute affiliated to
Tehran University said the tremor, epicentered in an area northeast
of Bam, occurred at 07:58 hours local time (03:28 GMT).
There were no reports of any casualty or damage from the quake.
