Iran fustal team defeats Uzbekistan 7-2 to moves into semifinal of Asian games

Asia's four-time futsal champion, Iran, waltzed into the semifinal of the 5th event in Tehran Sunday as it won a practice quarterfinal against Uzbekistan, IRNA repoted.

Before over 10,000 flag-waving partisan fans, Iran booked a berth in the semifinals with a 7-2 walkover.

Top goalscorer of Asia, Vahid Shamsaei, struck three, and his teammates Siamak Dadashi, Mohsen Zarei, Saeid Abdollah-Nejadian, and Kazem Mohammadi scored a goal apiece.

Iran won the first half 5-1.

Shamsaei was announced "Player of the Match" by the technical committee.

In other quarterfinals played Sunday, Japan humbled Taiwan, Thailand defeated Kyrgyzstan, and Kuwait beat South Korea.

Nippon gave Taiwan a bitter pill to swallow as it won the game 7-0 in the 12,000-seater hall of Azadi Sports Complex, 10 km west of Tehran.

On Monday, Japan meets Thailand in the semifinals.

Thailand stormed into the semifinals of the Asian event as it overcame Kyrgyzstan on August 3.

The Thais won the quarterfinal 2-1.

Earlier, Kuwait edged past South Korea to squeeze into the semifinals.

The two sides fought to a 1-1 draw in the normal time in front of some 8,000 fans.

Kuwait celebrated the victory in the quarterfinals as it converted five penalties and the Korean side missed one to lose 5-6.

On August 4, Kuwait meets the powerful side Iran.


Iran is determined to win the 5th Asian futsal crown, said Mohammad-Hassan Ansarifard on July 25.

Iran's head coach further told IRNA that 14 regulars are match-fit.

Ansarifard said he has fielded his top players from the very beginning to make them adopt the conditions of matches.

On July 23, the Iranian manager of Kuwait, Hossein Shams, said Iran will retain the Asian futsal title.

Shams told IRNA, "With management of Mohammad-Hassan Ansarifard and top players, Iran will undoubtedly snatch the top title.

"Iran is highly superior to other Asian futsal teams and will remain the undisputed Asian side in the coming years."

On June 30, former futsal head coach of Iran and Pas manager Hossein Shams signed a one-year contract with Kuwait to take the helm of national side.
