Azeri Minister of Economic Development Farhad Aliyev on Wednesday appreciated Iran' economic assistance to his country, IRNA reported from Baku.
In a meeting with Head of Iran's Customs Administration and Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Massoud Karbasian he said the Iran has always assisted Azerbaijan on various issue, including establishing ties between Nakhichevan and Baku, customs facilities and transportation affairs .
Commending Iran on its interest in Azerbaijan's security and stability, he added, "I am confident that economy and trade relations between Tehran and Baku will strengthen in the future."
He further highlighted Iran's dlrs 40 million loan and dlrs two million grant for upgrading of the Azerbaijan roads as 'significant'.
Karbasian called the visit by the Azeri President Heidar Aliyev to Iran last year as a turning point in bilateral ties.
He said customs affairs have played an important role in expansion of trade between countries and expressed Iran's readiness to cooperate with Baku in upgrading of their customs facilities on the common border.
He further stressed the need to remove double taxation on trade of goods and services between the two countries, levying uniform tolls on Iranian and Azeri trucks and setting up other custom-related facilities.
As a sign of the two countries closer economic and trade cooperation, Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Tehran Abbasali Kara Oglu Hasanov said here last month that Iran plans to invest in 10 major projects in Azerbaijan.
Speaking at a meeting with businessmen and merchants of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mines in Mashhad, he said the Iranian government was planning o invest dlrs 130 million in various projects in the roads and gas sectors in Azerbaijan.
He noted that the intended investments would raise the volume of economic exchanges between the two countries to over dlrs 450 million.
He further said that details on the implementation of various projects will still be discussed in an upcoming visit of Iranian President Khatami to Azerbaijan. However, he did not elaborate on the probable date of Khatami's visit to Azerbaijan.
Welcoming any investments in his country by Iranian traders and businessmen, the ambassador stressed that both Iran and Azerbaijan should find the means to use all their potentials to raise the living standards of their peoples.
He also voiced Azerbaijan's readiness to cooperate with Iran in various trade, commerce and cultural concerns.
