Iran: Union of Publishers protests prison terms for author, publisher

The Union of Publishers from Tehran protested to President Mohammad Khatami against prison terms for a publisher, an author, a translator, a critic and director general of the Ministry of Culture and the Islamic Guidance in charge of authorizing publication of books, IRNA reported from Tehran.

They said in a statement faxed to IRNA that imprisonment of the individuals mentioned above runs counter to the freedoms stipulated in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic.

"The publisher who has been jailed received authorization for the book from the Ministry of Culture and the Islamic Guidance. We ask the top ranking officials, especially the president, to tell us from which organ we should have received a permission?" the statement said protesting the prison terms the court has issued.

Author of 'Iran's Women Musicians', Toka Maleki, Jaafar Homai, the publisher and critique Banafsheh Samgis have received prison terms.

Translator of the book 'Women Behind Veil and Well-Dressed Men' Maliheh Moghazei and the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry Director General Majid Sayyadi have received prison terms.
