An Iranian female lawmaker said in Yazd on Wednesday that Iranian women absolutely have the right to run for president per the Constitution, IRNA reported.
Member of Parliament from Tehran Fatemeh Rakeie told a group of women that based on the Constitution the political and religious figures can run for president.
Rakeie said Iranian women are competent enough to participate in the presidential election.
"Islam attaches great importance to women, so there should be no difference between men and women and if any, it should be in women`s favor," said Rakeie.
The parliamentarian then highlighted steps taken in recent years to improve the status of women in Iran such as dispatch of girl students abroad and the right of women to divorce under condition when their husband is addict and bad-tempered or refuses to pay alimony. She said efforts are underway to change the law on blood money in favor of women.
She criticised certain laws that do not allow women to draw any cash from funds of their children or give consent for surgery of their children.
