SAN FRANCISCO, CA. August 16, 2003 -- The Bay Area Iranian-American Voter Association (BAIVOTER), an Iranian-American voter education and advocacy organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, today announced it will be holding a number of voter registration activities in the run up to the September 22 voter registration deadline for the upcoming Recall Election in California.
"We were planning to conduct a voter registration campaign in the run up to the 2004 presidential primaries and general election, but the California Recall Election has created some urgency to conduct an intensive campaign before the September 22 deadline," said Niloufar Nouri, BAIVOTER founding member and Executive Director.
Out of some 240 potential candidates who turned in candidacy filing papers to their county election office, 135 candidates have been certified by the California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley for the Recall Election.
For the first time in history, there are two Iranian-Americans on the certified list of candidates to replace embattled Governor Gray Davis.
"This is a first, and we are hoping it will excite and encourage Iranian-Americans to register and vote," stated Nouri.
The group has held a number of voter registration activities over the past year with the help of volunteers. It plans to conduct voter registration in front of Iranian stores, as well as attend upcoming Iranian-American cultural events in the Bay Area to register voters.
Nouri said the group will kick off the campaign with tonight's Dariush concert at the Flint Center in Cupertino, where group volunteers will be registering those attending the concert.
"We are calling on the Iranian-American community to join us in our efforts to register voters over the next few weeks," said Nouri. "We have found that this kind of community work is really gratifying, and lots of fun," she continued, explaining that interested members of the community can contact the organization at firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up to participate in the upcoming voter registration activities.
