President Mohammad Khatami said in Tehran on Wednesday that unilateralism is not harmful just in political aspects rather it could entail more dangers in information areas, IRNA reported.
Khatami made the remark as he talked to reporters at Mehrabad International Airport before his departure for Geneva to take part in the "World Summit of the Information Society" to be held there Dec 10-12.
"The situation of information today makes the world face with new and sensitive conditions, and speedy and extensive digital competition and communication has created a situation that is different from the past," Khatami said.
"This situation would result in great benefits for human beings but enters the human life into a chapter which deserves further contemplation," he added.
He termed the World Summit of the Information Society as very important and said thousands of experts are to discuss communication and information in the future.
The president noted that participants are to exchange views on fair access of people to information as well as legal and political arrangements fit for such a situation.
"Intellectuals and politicians should eventually reach consensus to this effect and adapt themselves to the new condition. They should try to prepare grounds for utilization of such situation while aking efforts to safeguard cultural and social characteristics of all nations," Khatami stressed.
He said ways should be paved for countries with less facilities to have better access to information and communication.
Khatami added that the Iranian delegation has been involved in this field since three years ago and hoped the country to achieve success in final document and in ratification of the meeting.
Officials from over 150 world countries, about 50 heads of states and more than 16,000 representatives of industry and non-governmental organizations are going to take part in the gathering which aims at reaching a universal compromise over the issue and taking commitments towards providing immediate, un-barred and all-out access to information by all countries.
