Quakes shake towns in Fars and Khorassan provinces of Iran

A relatively strong earthquake wit an intensity of 4.5 degrees on the Richter scale jolted the town of Zarrindasht in Iran's southern province of Fars on Tuesday for the second time, IRNA reported from Shiraz.

The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute, affiliated to the Tehran University, said the tremor, epicentered in an area southeast of the capital city of Shiraz, occurred at 12:50 hours local time (0920 GMT).

There were no reports of any casualty or damage caused by the quake.

An earthquake with an intensity of 4.6 degrees on the Richter scale jolted Zarrindasht at 10:02 hours local time (0632 GMT) on the same day.

Zarrindasht, having some 70,000 residents, is located 300 km southeast of Shiraz city.

Another relatively strong earthquake with an intensity of 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale jolted the towns of Maneh and Samalqan in Iran's northeastern province of Khorassan on Monday night, IRNA reported from Mashhad.

The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute, affiliated to the Tehran University, said the tremor, epicentered in an area 290 km northwest of capital city of Mashhad, occurred at 22:43 hours local time (1913 GMT Friday).

There were no reports of any casualty or damage caused by the quake.

Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines and quakes of varying magnitudes are of usual occurrence.
