Official says Iran's banks to be privatized soon

Tehran, Jan 7, IRNA -- Deputy Economic and Finance Minister Mehdi Karbassian here on Monday said that as per a recent cabinet decision all banks in Iran, except Bank Melli, will be privatized, the local press reported here on Tuesday.

The Persian-language `Hambastegi' quoted Karbassian as saying that a high council to look into the privatization of banks has held several meetings over the past two weeks and has agreed on the need to privatize these banks.

He further said that the only impediment to implementation of the cabinet decision is the absence of a procedure, the details of which will be worked out with the cabinet's approval.

"Once this procedure is drawn up, the government will proceed with the required steps to effect the transfer," Karbassian said.
