Tehran, Jan 8, IRNA -- The Islamic Iran Participation Front (IIPF) on Wednesday expressed concern about the continued detention in solitary cells of three defendants over the polling case and depriving them of the counsel rights.
Issuing a strongly worded statement, the political party said that the charges brought against those in charge of the Polls Institute including Abbas Abdi, Hossein Qazian and Behrouz Geranpayeh are baseless and politically motivated.
The IIPF called for immediate release from prison of the defendants and for the proceeding to go ahead free from psychological pressure on the defendants.
The statement said that the proceedings are subject to ambiguity and ignorance of the current law which guarantees counsel rights for the defendants.
"Even those accused of so-called subversion were released (on bail) after their first court hearing, but why are the proceedings not following the normal procedure honoring the defendants right to enjoy counsel and why have the lawyers been required to talk with their clients in presence of the investigators?" the statement asked.
The IIPF called on respective officials to respect constitutional rights of the defendants and see themselves responsible before the Constitution, the great nation and the public opinion.
