Baku, Jan 18, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Representatives of the five Caspian states will have a meeting on the Caspian ecology in Tehran on January 25-29, Viktor Kalyuzhny, the Russian deputy foreign minister and special envoy of the Russian president for the settlement of the Caspian legal status, told Tass on Thursday.
He arrived in Baku on a two-day working visit.
Kalyuzhny said the draft convention on the protection of the Caspian environment would be discussed in the Iranian capital. He said the document is virtually ready, so it can be signed or at least initialled.
Kalyuzhny said one of the aims of his visit to Baku is to coordinate the positions of the sides on the convention. "We have some discrepancies, but they are immaterial," he said.
Kalyuzhny said he will discuss with his Azeri counterpart Khalaf Khalafov the question of preparing of a five-lateral meeting of the working groups of the littoral states on the Caspian legal status.
The meeting was initially scheduled for the autumn of 2002 but was twice postponed. According to diplomatic sources, it can be held in Baku in February. The draft convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea will be the main topic of debating.
