200,000 People Converge on San Francisco to Protest U.S. War on Iraq
San Francisco - Saturday Jan 18- Thousands of people took to the streets of San Francisco to protest the impending war on Iraq by the United States. Young and old chanted demands for peace as they marched on Market St. to their destination point at Civic Center where they heard speakers such as Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Despite the large number of protestors which surprised the initial estimate of 40,000, and the organizers' estimate of 200,000, the atmosphere remained
very orderly, peaceful, and friendly. The protestors who represented the
true diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area exercised dissent, one of the
most important of their Civil Liberties as called upon by Dr. Martin Luther
King. Here are a few pictures from the event.
