Iran to become self-sufficient in wheat production in next 4 year

Iran will no longer need to import wheat in the next four years, said a senior Agricultural Jihad Ministry official Mohammad-Reza Eskandari in Ardebil on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Eskandari, who is an advisor to minister of agricultural jihad and advisor and in charge of a wheat production project, told a group of directors and experts at the ministry that Iran enjoys good potential for wheat production and in light of strong support from the government it can turn into a major exporter of the crop in the future.

He said Iran's wheat imports dropped to two million tons last year from 5.5 million tons thanks to successful wheat production project and a further 500,000 tons cut in import is predicted this year, which would push down the total imports to 1.5 million tons.
