4.9 Quake jolts southern province of Kerman in Iran

An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale shook the southern province of Kerman Sunday evening, IRNA reported.

The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute affiliated to Tehran University said the tremor, epicentered in an area south of Kerman, occurred at 20:36 hours local time (16:06 GMT).

There were no reports of any casualty or damage.

Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic faultlines and quakes of varying magnitudes are usual occurrences.

Since 1991, over 950 earthquakes have hit the country resulting in 17,600 deaths and 53,300 injuries.
