CFS and FEUQ denounce the repression suffered by Iranian students

Montreal, July 4 2003- Further to the recent demonstrations in Iran, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) and la Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec (FEUQ) revolt against the violent acts perpetrated by the government on students from Tehran University and the arrest of 4,000 demonstrators. Student demonstrations began in mid June to protest against plans to privatize the country's university system and have since grown into opposition to the totalitarian nature of the Iranian regime.

"University communities throughout the world must speak out when one of them is prevented from demonstrating in a free and independent manner. University students must be able to carry out a critical analysis of their society" insists Ian Boyko, National Chairperson of the CFS. "It is fundamentally important that universities have a full autonomy and academic freedom that allows them to play a leading role in the move towards a more democratic society and the respect of fundamental rights" insists likewise Nicolas Brisson, President of la FEUQ.

That is why the CFS and la FEUQ demand that the Iranian authorities free political prisoners, respect the right to demonstrate and carry out the promised reforms as soon as possible.

The Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) represents 475,000 students across Canada and la Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec (FEUQ) brings together 19 university student associations representing 145,000 students throughout Québec.
