In the 10-day contests, teams from provincial cities of Salmas and Orumiyeh as well as Tehran with compete against Georgian, Russian and Armenian sportsmen.
The competitions will be attended by 35 teams consisting of 317 sportsmen, out of which nine teams are foreign.
The male and female contestants will compete in various fields including chess, volleyball, basketball, football, table tennis and tennis.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the festival, deputy to West Azerbaijan governor-general for political and security affairs, Abbas Khorshidi, said that the Islamic Republic of Iran feels committed to provide the religious minorities with necessary grounds for their activities.
Expressing satisfaction with the ongoing festival in Orumiyeh, he noted that the contests prove that the Assyrian youth are determined to strengthen friendly ties through sport games.
"The Assyrian community along with other minorities have played a decisive role in providing an atmosphere of consensus and brotherhood in the country," he added.
The opening ceremony was attended by MP from Orumiyeh Karim Fattahpour, MP from Makou Mohammad Abbasipour, a number of officials from the provincial state departments as well as Assyrian religious authorities.
At the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony, the competing teams paraded and acrobatic shows were performed by a number of sportsmen.
