Under the single article of the bill, the Iranian government is authorized to join the convention that comprises an introduction and 33 articles.
However, MPs Mousa Qorbani, Iraj Nadimi and Hassan Sobhani, in separate speeches, criticized the bill, stressing that it is against the Sharia law of Islam and that it is unnecessary given that the Iranian Constitution had adopted enough considerations to deal with the issue of torture.
The MPs maintained that Article 38 of the Constitution had already banned torture and has indicated that any confession obtained through torture has no legal validity. They said that this was enough for implementing the laws on banning torture in the country.
The MPs also said that the bill is against Article 3 of the Constitution that calls for adapting the laws according to the Sharia law of Islam.
They argued that the bill is against the Sharia which has explicitly defined certain punishments.
