Some 162 MPs in a letter addressed to
President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday called for follow-up on
release of Iranian documentary film producers who are currently in
custody of the American troops in Iraq, IRNA reported from Tehran.
Two Iranian documentary film directors of the Islamic Republic of
Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) second channel, Sa'id Aboutaleb, and Soheil
Karimi, who left for Iraq on June 12 to make a film on the life of
Iraqi people, along with their driver and interpreter were arrested by
the US forces on July 1.
The letter, which was read out in Majlis open session on
Wednesday, said that the invading forces in Iraq have practically
blocked free flow of the information by their regretfully violent
approach towards the media correspondents.
"By murdering and harassing journalists, they have proved that
they have acted contrary to their claimed democracy and against
international laws," it added.
The letter further referred to the arrest of two Iranian film
directors as a blatant violation of democracy and freedom.
Turning to the protest of a great number of Iranian writers and
graduates to the measure, they called on President Khatami to issue
the order for the serious follow-up of the case by the Foreign
Ministry to release the Iranian correspondents detained by American
troops.
