5.2 Quake shakes northwestern Iranian province of Ardebil

An earthquake jolted the town of Bilesavar, in the northwestern province of Ardebil, Sunday morning, IRNA reported.

The head of Ardebil's natural disaster headquarters, Ahmad Kan'anpour, said the tremor, measuring 5.2 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, was epicentered in Azerbaijan.

The quake occurred at 10:31 hours local time (06:01 GMT).

There were no reports of casualties or damage.

Since 1991, over 950 earthquakes have hit the country resulting in 17,600 deaths and 53,300 injuries.
