Iranians ranked second in obtaining German citizenship in 2002

Iranian nationals were the second largest group of foreigners who obtained German citizenship in 2002, according to the Federal Statistical Office, based in the southwest German city of Wiesbaden, IRNA reported from Berlin on Friday.

Some 13,026 Iranian nationals or 8.4 percent became naturalized Germans last year, while Turkish nationals headed the list of foreigners with 64,631 citizens or 41.8 percent of the total.

There was however an overall 13.2 percent decline in naturalization as some 154,500 foreigners became German citizens in 2002.

The enactment of new immigration laws which have loosened the strict rules on acquiring German citizenship, has led to a new naturalization wave over the past three years.
