Tehran, March 3, IRNA -- Iran's sole chess grandmaster Ehsan Qaem-Maqami stood second in the Asian men's event ended in Doha, capital of Qatar, on Sunday.
Qaem-Maqami whose 8th-round fight against the Indian grandmaster Krishna Sasikiran ended in a stalemate finished runner-up to the Indian.
With four wins and five draws, the Iranian snatched the silver with 6.5 points, 0.5 point shy of Sasikiran's.
Collecting 6 points, Muhamed al-Madhiki of Qatar ranked third.
Forty-four chess players from 21 countries competed in the 9th-round Swiss-style Asian tournament.
The Iranian player holds the international ranking of 2,500. He ranked second in the 1999 Asian chess competitions, finished runner-up in an international tournament in Moscow, and stood third at India's grandmasters contests.
