President Mohammad Khatami on Monday said that Tehran-Ashkhabad close and peaceful relations can be considered as an appropriate model for other regional states, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported from Tehran.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran after welcoming his Turkmen counterpart, President Saparmurat Niyazov, he announced that nine different documents on bilateral cooperation will be signed between the Iranian and Turkmen officials during Niyazov's stay in Tehran.
The two countries' senior officials are determined to further promote bilateral cooperation in different economic, political and cultural areas, he added.
Tehran-Ashkhabad bilateral relations which are based on mutual respect, enjoy a peaceful nature, the Iranian president noted.
Expressing his concern over the escalation of war and violation in different parts of the world, particularly in the region, President Khatami hoped that friendly relations will be established among all countries.
Meanwhile, President Niyazov told reporters that both Tehran and Ashkhabad share identical views regarding several international and regional developments.
Issues of mutual interest and the legal regime of the Caspian Sea will be top on the agenda of talks to be held between the visiting Turkmen delegation and senior Iranian officials, he said, adding that an agreement will be inked by the two sides on the Caspian Sea legal regime.
Niyazov arrived here this morning at the head of a high-ranking delegation on a two-day official visit.
He is scheduled to meet and confer with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the first day of his stay in Tehran.
