Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi here on Tuesday stressed the need to review existing laws that deny women their internationally recognized rights, IRNA reported from Tehran on Wednesday.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Majlis Women's Faction, Shahroudi pointed out that Islam puts women on a pedestal and demands respect and enforcement of their rights.
He stressed that although human rights are much touted in the West, the fact is that women in that part of the world still have a long way to go in the enforcement of their rights.
Meanwhile, the head of the Majlis Women's Faction, Hamideh Edalat, praised studies made by the Supreme Council for Judiciary Developments to identify issues related to women and the youth.
She also called for a revision of the laws on divorce, blood money, inheritance and Islamic punishment in so far as they diminish or negate the rights of women.
