Low standard of technology blamed for gas exploitation failure in Iran

An Iranian gas industry official Monday regretted failure to fully exploit gas reservoirs due to inferior standards of domestic technology, saying only about 20 trillion cubic meters out of about 26.6 trillion cubic meters were exploited, IRNA reported from Tehran.

Head of the National Iranian Gas Company's (NIGC) Department for Investigation of Resources and Projects Davood Yousefi told IRNA here Monday that presently about six trillion cubic meters of the gas of the country, which contains 17 percent of the world's gas reserves, are wasted.

Yousefi said a project is underway to lay a fourth pipeline nationwide, 56 inches in diameter and 800 kms long, for transfer of 100 million cubic meters of natural gas from Assalouyeh and Parsian refineries daily.

He said more than 100 kilometers of the pipeline have been laid down and the remaining one would reach southern Iranian city of Shiraz (Fars Province).

He added that gas is the source for generation of more than 90 percent of energy at power plants and for about 45 percent of energy produced nationwide.
