Torkan told the Fourth National Energy Seminar that per capita natural gas consumption in Iran totals 1,000 cubic meters a year, bringing the total consumption of the energy to about 67 billion cubic meters annually.
He said power plants have a share of 36 percent, the household sector 33 percent and industries 14 percent in the annual natural gas consumption.
Iran is second major gas rich state after Russia by holding 23 to 26 trillion cubic meters of gas or 18 percent of the world's total reserves.
The Fourth National Energy Seminar, entitled `Energy for Development in the 21st Century', opened in Tehran on Saturday. Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf and a number of other officials were present at the meeting, which is to focus on priorities and prospects of sustainable energy development, energy and economy, the mid- and long-term strategies for development of energy, regional development of energy sector, promotion of productivity in energy sector and energy technology.
About 1,200 Iranian and foreign experts are attending the conference, said Deputy Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian in an address to the opening session.
Chitchian said 45 essays are to be presented at the two-day meeting.
He said 15 of the articles have been sent to the secretariat by experts from Canada, Poland, India, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Spain, the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
An exhibition of energy is reportedly underway on sidelines of the festival.
