Iran veteran lifters keep breaking world records

Veteran weightlifters of Iran are improving the world records one after another, IRNA reported from Shiraz, Iran.

During the competitions in Bahman 22 Sports Complex of Shiraz, Keramat Owlad-Vatani representing the western province of Ardebil in the 45-49 age group set a new 85 kg world record by a total lift of 252.5 kilograms on Saturday.

A US weightlifter was the previous record holder of world, whose 235 kg record was registered in Melbourne, Australia, in 2002.

Owlad-Vatani broke the record by 17.5 kg.

In 56 kg, Alinaqi Rabiei of Fars province improved the world record by 2.5 kg by lifting 190 kg in snatch and clean-and-jerk efforts in the 40-45 age category.

A German weightlifter was the former record holder.

Lahrasseb Behrouzi and Habib Ja'farzadeh representing Fars and Tehran provinces in the 85 kg class of the 40-44 age group broke the record of a Ukrainian weightlifter by 20 and 17.5 kg respectively as the duo lifted 267.5 and 265 kg totally.

Ardeshir Shamsi, a 94 kg Khuzestani lifter, managed to set a new world record in the 45-49 age group. He improved the clean-and-jerk record of this category by 1.5 kg as he kept 152.5 kg above his head. A lifter from Ukraine held the record before.

Lifting 190 kg in snatch and clean and jerk, Ramezan Shirkhani broke the world's 69 kg record of the 55-59 age group by 2.5 kg. An Australian was the previous record holder.

Ya'qoub Salari of Fars starred on Saturday. In 90 kg class of the 40-44 age category, Salari succeeded in lifting 302.5 kg totally improving the record of a Ukrainian by 27.5 kg.

On the first day (Friday), the veteran weightlifters broke three world records.

Eynollah Jalali-Rad and Yadollah Baqeri of Isfahan and Mohammad Nouri from Mazandaran improved the world records in 85, 69, and 115 kg categories respectively.

During the three-day event, 187 lifters compete in Bahman 22 Hall of Shiraz.

In 85 kg, Jalali-Rad improved the world record by 10 kilograms as he lifted 75 kg in snatch. He also managed to break the clean-and-jerk record by five kilograms by lifting 97.5 kg. An Austrian weightlifter was the previous record holder.

Baqeri broke the record of British lifter Patrick in the world's 69 kg class in 2002 competitions in Melbourne, Australia.

Competing in the 54-55 age group, Baqeri improved the total record by 12.5, lifting 205 kg in snatch and clean-and-jerk efforts.

Nouri lifted 250 kg totally, breaking the world 115 kg record by 2.5 kilograms.
