Iran's Parliament Speaker says Iranians would stand fast against threats

Majlis Speaker Mehdi Karroubi vowed in Semnan Wednesday that the Iranian nation would stand firm against any threats to the Islamic system and Revolution, IRNA reported.

Addressing the people of Shahroud city, he said the Iranians have courageously defended the Islamic Revolution in tough times over the past two decades and would do so in future.

He touched on the Iranian government's detente policy and said Iran wants good relations with other states based on the mutual respect.

He said Iran has gained great achievements in various domains since the culmination of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran adding hat these achievements have been gained thanks to the steady presence of the Iranian peoples in all the scenes of the revolution.

The officials are thankful to the people who have defended the principles of the Islamic Revolution in tough times, he noted.

He then commented on the problems facing the local people and said unemployment and shortage of potable water are two main problems the people of Shahroud are faced with.

He called on the competent authorities to mull over measures to address their challenges.

Karroubi's comments on the defense against threats was an allusion to the US anti-Iran allegations and hostile rhetoric.

Karroubi arrived here on Wednesday to inaugurate several development projects in this northeastern province.

Upon arrival at the airport, Karroubi and his entourage were welcomed by the provincial governor general, the city's Friday prayers leader and some other officials of the province.

Meanwhile, the Majlis speaker proceeded to the city's cemetery where he paid respect to those martyred in the course of the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war.

During his two-day tour of the province, Karroubi is scheduled to visit the local people and officials and get first-hand information about the problems facing the province.
