President Mohammad Khatami on Monday
called on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) to be
politically neutral towards all parties and groups in the country, IRNA reported from Tehran.
During a meeting with members of the council entrusted with
supervision over the IRIB, Khatami gave an overview of the status and
role the mass media plays in global affairs, adding that it is
incumbent on the IRIB to make clear the policies of the Islamic
Republic system to its clients here and abroad.
The president also pointed to the importance of supervision as
a way of pre-empting or solving problems, urging the council to
perform its oversight function over IRIB broadcasts without political
leanings.
"An institution which serves the people and is financed by public
funds should be responsive to its obligations," stressed the
president.
Khatami expressed the hope that the IRIB, under the wise and
unshackled supervision of the supervisory council, would achieve even
greater success in fulfilling its national responsibility.
He also alluded to the many expectations and views expressed
regarding IRIB programs, and said the council is expected to strike
a balance in these conflicting expectations and solve the problems
in this regard.
President Khatami strongly urged cooperation and coordination
between the IRIB and governmental institutions responsible for
national diplomacy in such a way as to bolster national security.
