Tehran Prosecutor's Office has announced that the case of academic Dariush Zahedi, who was released on Sunday, is still open, stressing that he will have to report to the court for further proceedings, IRNA reported from Tehran.
An official with the office, talking to IRNA, confirmed reports that Zahedi had been released on a bail of two billion rials (250,000 US dollars), but refused to verify comments that he is also free to leave the country.
"Zahedi must appear at the court on a date that the judge handling his case has set or he will lose the bail," the official said.
The academic, who lectures at California University, was arrested in July on charges of espionage and provoking unrest. There has still been no official comment on his release. Yet, some sources have said that there is no restriction for Zahedi to leave Iran.
Mohammad Shadabi, a spokesman for Tehran Prosecutor's Office, told the Associated Press late Sunday that Zahedi had been released after his relatives posted the bail.
Shadabi also gave no further details.
