An earthquake measuring 4.9
degree on the open-ended Richter scale jolted the town of Bojnourd in
the northeastern province of Khorassan on Tuesday, IRNA reported.
The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute, affiliated to
the Tehran University, said the tremors, epicentered in an area 220
km northeast of the provincial capital city of Mashhad, occurred at
09:07 hours local time (0537 GMT).
Governor of Bojnourd Ali Khosravi said there were no reports of
any casualty or damage caused by the quake.
Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic fault
lines and quakes of varying magnitudes are of usual occurrence.
