Azeri Defense Ministry on Thursday denied reports by a number of Baku news media regarding Azerbaijan's concern over launch of an Iranian gunboat in the Caspian Sea, IRNA reported from Baku.
A number of news media here Wednesday quoted spokesman for the Azeri Defense Ministry as announcing that launch of an Iranian gunboat in the Caspian Sea waters has been followed by Baku's concerns and that the move would escalate tension in the region.
Talking to IRNA, the Azeri spokesman denied the statement quoted by the media and stressed that Iran's measure is not at all a threat to the Azeri interests.
He further reiterated that the two countries enjoy close and amicable relations.
Any move to militarize the Caspian Sea is a threat to all regional countries, he said, adding that all the Caspian Sea littoral states, including Iran, lay emphasis on the non-military status of the sea.
Iran invites Azeri prime minister
Iran's First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref on Wednesday cabled a message to Azeri Prime Minister Ilkham Aliyev inviting him to pay an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, IRNA reported.
According to Press Bureau of the Iranian Embassy in Baku, the letter has praised the efforts of officials of the two countries to broaden bilateral ties.
Following the exchange of visits by high ranking officicals, bilateral relations have developed in recent years.
