Quake jolts Iran-Turkmenistan border region


An earthquake, measuring 4.9 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, shook Raz and Jorgalan areas in Bojnurd, the northeastern province of Khorassan on Sunday, IRNA reported from Tehran.

Head of the Quchan Seismological Base, affiliated to Tehran University's Geophysics Institute, Ahmad Khosravi put the epicenter of the tremor in 300 km northwestern Mashhad, and said it occurred at 08:32 hours local time.

There is no report yet of any casualty or damage caused by the quake.

Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic faultlines and quakes of varying magnitude are of usual occurrence.
