The special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNHCR), Ambeyi Ligabo, will visit Iran on November 4-10 at the government's invitation, said a press release issued by the UN Information Center in Tehran on Sunday, IRNA reported.
It added that during the visit, Ligabo is scheduled to meet senior Iranian government officials and magistrates as well as representatives of civil society including members of the media and academics.
"The mandate on promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression was created by the Human Rights Commission in 1993.
"The special rapporteur is gathering relevant information on, among other issues, discrimination and threats or use of violence and harassment directed at persons, including professionals in the field of information, seeking to exercise or to promote the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression," the press release concluded.
