4.9 Quake jolts southern Fars province of Iran


An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the open-ended richter scale jolted the cities of Zarrindasht, Jahrom and Lar in the southern province of Fars Friday, IRNA reported.

According to the seismological network of Fars province affiliated to Tehran University Geophysics Institute, the earthquake occurred at 9:28 local time (5:58 GMT).

The epicenter of the tremor was registered 241 southeast to the provincial capital of Shiraz.

The quake resulted in no loss of life but inflicted serious damage to many buildings in the region.

Zarrindasht is located 300 kms to Shiraz. It was jolted with two strong quakes measuring 5.8 and 5.6 in July this year which illed two people and ruined 4,299 residential units. Over 200 aftershocks have jolted the city since.
