Deputy Energy Minister Reza Amrollahi said at the ground breaking ceremony of Roudbar Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant on Wednesday that currently 243 dams are either being constructed in Iran or are undergoing feasibility studies, IRNA reported from Doroud, Lorestan province.
He added that construction of 79 dams have reached various stages of completion, while pilot study for the construction of 164 other dams are almost complete and their construction work would start in the near future.
Elaborating, Amrollahi said, "Construction works for six dams are between 75 to 100 percent complete, 13 dams have progressed between 50 to 70 percent while those for 26 projects the progress range between 35 to 50 percent, and the construction process of 44 dams have been completed less than 25 percent."
Noting that Iran is situated in a dry and semi-dry geographical region, the deputy minister said, "That is the reason why we need to make huge investments in dam building to save every possible drop of water throughout the country."
He said that Iran`s share of the world`s fresh waters is less than 37 percent, Amrollahi said, "The Energy Ministry is therefore obliged to make the best of the country`s water resources by constructing various types of dams, plus producing as much hydro-electricity as possible."
He added, "In the past six years, six billion cubic meters of river waters were stored in newly constructed dams, and we have schedules for storing four more billion cubic meters in the next two years, from which we will also take maximum advantage by generating electricity."
The deputy minister said, "We predict that in the remainder of the current (Iranian) year (ending on March 21 2004), ten dams would become fully operational, while the filling of the lakes of six other dams would start."
He said that in the rivers which can generate huge amounts of hydro-electrical power including Karoun, Karkheh and Dez, power plants of the dams under construction and constructed over them would generate 90 percent of Iran`s hydro-electricity.
Amrollahi concluded, "Currently we are producing 4,412 megawatts of hydro-electricity, of which 60 percent has been added after the victory of the Islamic Revolution."
The construction of Lorestan Province`s Roudbar Dam and Hydro-Electric Power Plant, which will store 200 million cubic meters of water, began on Wednesday coinciding with the auspicious birth anniversary of Imam Ali (AS).
