Reporters Without Borders and other groups call for immediate action in the Kazemi case

MONTREAL, Sept. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - Amnesty International Canada (Francophone Section), the Federation Professionnelle des Journalistes du Québec, the International Legal Resources Centre and Reporters Without Borders Canada are asking the Canadian government to undertake several legal actions at both national and international levels in the Zahra Kazemi case. These demands are supported by several human rights and journalist associations.

In a 30 page document, the International Legal Resources Centre outlines numerous legal steps Canada should take to ensure justice occurs in this case. These demands are supported by all the signatory organizations as well as Zahra Kazemi's son, Stephan Hachemi.

We are asking Canada to:

  • investigate instances of torture in accordance to the Canadian Criminal Code and for crimes against humanity in accordance to the law on Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes.

  • recognize the necessity of an international investigation into this case and to start the procedures towards such an investigation. This can be done by officially presenting the dossier to the United Nations, for them to eventually be the lead on any such investigation.

  • quickly submit an appeal to the International Court of Justice concerning violations of the Vienna Convention in regards to consular relations. Ms. Kazemi, who had dual nationalities, should have benefited from her full rights as a Canadian citizen as well as Canadian consular protection.

  • officially present the Kazemi case to several representatives of the United Nations including the Special Rapporter on the Question of Torture, the Special Rapporter for Freedom of Expression, the Representative of the Work Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Special Representative of the Secretary General on the situation of human rights defenders.
