Iranian judoist Arash Miresmaili defeated Olympic silver medalist Larbi Benboudaoud of France to win the men`s under 66kg first title at the world judo championships in Tokyo, Japan on Saturday, IRNA reported.
He eliminated Sydney Olympic champion Huseyin Ozkan of Turkey and Magomed Dzhafarov of Russia on his way to the final.
The 23-year old gold medalist joined Iran's national judo team at the age of 15.
Mir-Esmaeili beat Li Da Wei of China in his first fight in -66 kg category. He succeeded in defeating Jozef Krnac from Slovakia in the next clash. He overcame the Olympic champion Huseyin Ozkan from Turkey in the third meet and then stormed into the semifinals by beating Namig Sultanov of Azerbaijan.
In -73 kg class, Hamed Malekmohammadi of Iran was eliminated with two wins and two losses. The Iranian judoist won his first clash against Rovsh Amandurdiver from Turkmenistan.
Malekmohammadi was beaten by the Russian Vitali Makarov in the second fight. He managed to beat Daniel Mallaun from Austria in the next match but lost to the Brazilian judoka Luiz Camilo and was knocked out of the world event.
