President Mohammad Khatami, speaking in Sepidan, Fars province on Tuesday, stressed the need for supervising elections but said such a supervision never implied robbing people from their freedom of choice, IRNA reported.
Making the remarks in the gathering of people in this southern Iranian city, he said people should be able to send their representatives to the Majlis (Parliament) upon their own free choice.
He said that people were now calling for sincerity and honesty on the part of the authorities and officials and would elect those who, as their representatives, will defend their rights and freedom. The president further pointed out that people were seeking "changes" but favored them to occur within the framework of the Islamic system.
He also expressed his confidence that a massive turnout in the elections would guarantee foiling enemy threats and conspiracies.
