Innovative Approaches to AIDS in Iran: Prospects and
Challenges for the Region
Date: Friday, October 3,
2003 Time: 6:30 pm, Reception at 6:00 Venue: Asia Society, 725 Park
Avenue at 70th Street, New York, NY 10021
Despite its strong attachment
to religious values, Iran has shown remarkable openness to addressing HIV/AIDS
and its relationship with drug use. Dr. Arash Alaei and Dr. Kamiar Alaei
can be credited for much of this story. This team of brothers established
the first counseling and care center for HIV-positive patients and injecting
drug users in Iran. As a result of their efforts, much of the stigma
associated with drug use and HIV/AIDS is being pushed aside. The program
will discuss the successes and challenges of HIV/AIDS in Iran and the
implications for the region.
