Jordan won the pulsating second-leg Group D
preliminary match of the Asian Nations Cup against Iran 3-2 in Amman
on Friday, IRNA reported.
Full-back Yahya Golmohammadi, who captained Iran in the absence
of injured Ali Daei for 38 minutes headed home an Iman Mob`ali cross
in the fifth minute.
Due to his injury, Golmohammadi was replaced by Sohrab
Bakhtiarizadeh seven minutes before the break.
Mahmoud el Gohari`s side was on level terms in the 39th minute
when Moayad Salim Mansour`s left-foot kick kissed the left side of the
net of out-of-sort keeper of Iran, Ebrahim Mirzapour.
The expectant home fans celebrated the second six minutes later
as Mahmoud Shelbaieh outjumped Bakhtiarizadeh, heading home a curling
corner.
Although Jordan possessed both ball and field after the interval
and piled on the pressure, Iran grabbed the equalizer in the 58th
minute.
Midfielder Moharram Navidkia sent a superb pass for international
striker Farhad Majidi in the penalty box and he rifled an angled shot
past the helpless goalie Amer Sabbah.
Iran`s defensive frailties were exposed once again, with
substitute Badran al Shagran rounding Bakhtiarizadeh to pat in a
Faisal Suleiman low chip in the six-yard area, sealing victory for
Jordan 10 minutes from time.
Manager Homayoun Shahrokhi tried to settle for a point by
introducing top goalscorer Edmond Bezik for Majidi in the 81st minute
but he was unable to fashion a way back for Iran.
Iran won the first leg 4-1 in the 100,000-seater Azadi Stadium,
