On Edward Said Loss
Syma Sayyah, Tehran

I am writing this in order to share the awful pain that I feel in my heart for loss of dear Edward Said, who passed away late Wednesday night in NY. From the moment I read about his flight from this side of life, I can not stop crying. I feel that we, this world has lost a very strong and important voice of reason. I called a few friends to share this terrible loss with but they are all away. no about they will all be as upset as I am, when they learn of this sad loss. Edward Said had a great following in Iran.

I cry not only because he was a most wonderful person who believed in dialogue and true efforts in reaching lasting peace through understanding, besides his scholarly work, but also because he was a most gentle, kind man. As his friend Mr. Cockburn said about him and his skin "His skin was so, so thin, I think because he knew that as long as he lived, as long as he marched onward as a proud, unapologetic and vociferous Palestinian, there would be some enemy on the next housetop down the street eager to pour sewage on his head." yet he marched on.

Despite his very true and high intellect he never stopped being a real human being with strong soft feelings and great passion. May all of those who cared for him, or and his ideas remember him and all that he stood for and continue his way.
