Tehran, Iran - Apr 1, 2004 (PRN): Daylle Deanna Schwartz' bestselling book on relationships, All Men Are Jerks Until Proven Otherwise, has been translated into nine languages and distributed in dozens of countries including Russia, Egypt, and Israel, but it won't be appearing in Iranian bookstores anytime soon.
Islamic Ministry Votes "No Jerks" in
order from amzon.com
Although the book was translated into Farsi and slated for release
by Iranian Publisher Salvan, the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic
Guidance delayed publication until the book could be examined by three Iranian
psychologists. Concluding that the book is based on western culture, the
Ministry just announced that the book is being rejected for publication because
of its unsuitability for an Iranian audience. No further information was
available from the Ministry. The Ministry is responsible for overseeing all
publishing in the country, whether of domestic or foreign origin.
Tehran translator Nasrin Sahihi suggested that the timing might be wrong for such a controversial book because of the imminent Iranian elections, and that the publisher may wait five or six months and try again. "But first they'd have to rewrite some of the contents and re-title the book. There are big cultural differences between the U.S. and Iran-for example, in Iran it is unacceptable to live with a boyfriend-but I hope we're able to do this book, because it's very needed in Iran." Although most Iranian women work outside the home and have more education than previously, their status in Iranian society remains distinctly second-class.
Schwartz, who had scheduled a trip to Iran to celebrate the book's publication there, has cancelled her travel plans. "My book being rejected definitely illustrates the need for the book," Schwartz said. "I'm devastated that the women of Iran may be deprived of a book that's helped so many women around the world. Being happy shouldn't be just a Western philosophy." Schwartz, whose book explains how getting a life helps women gain more control over their needs, which attracts healthier men, speaks frequently at university women's studies classes. All Men are Jerks has sold more than 50,000 copies in the U.S. so far to women aged 16 to 85. It is used as a text in several colleges. Schwartz, who has discussed her book on over 75 U.S. talk shows including Oprah, Howard Stern, and Good Morning America, is the author of several books including "How to Please a Woman In and Out of Bed" and the forthcoming book, "Girl Talk With Gay Guys"-- neither of which is slated for publication in Iran.
