Bandar Abbas, April 10, IRNA -- A new railroad is under construction in the Astrakhan region of Russia the completion of which would connect Iran by rail to Europe, said a visiting offical from Astrakhan region here Friday night.
Speaking at a banquet given in his honor by the governor of southern Hormuzgan province, Anatoli Guzhvin, the governor of Astrakhan region of Russia said the new railroad would link the region to the main Russia-Europe railroad network.
Guzhvin arrived in the provincial capital city of Bandar Abbas last Thursday at the head of an economic and political delegation on a two-day visit.
Noting that the new 44-kilometer railroad that is currently being constructed in Russia's Astrakhan region would provide Iran access to European countries' railroad networks, the governor optimistically said the first train traveling the Astrakhan route will soon be heading for Iran from Europe. He, however, did not mention the exact date when the first train coming from Europe via the route would arrive.
Guzhvin also said that van Iranian consulate will be opened in the Astrakhan region in the near future and will, hopefully, help promote mutual cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the region.
Guzhvin, after inspecting a number of provincial facilities in Hormuzgan, inked several letters of understanding with its officials.
