Tehran, April 17, IRNA -- Minister of Road and Transportations Ahmad Khorram said here Saturday that with the implementation of Iran-Turkmenistan economic cooperation agreements and increase in trade transactions, the volume of trade exchanges between the two countries will reach one billion dollar this year.
Speaking in the 8th Iran-Turkmen Economic Commission meeting, he said through cooperation of experts from the two countries, the Friendship Dam will be commission in the middle of the current year.
He added that the Bafq-Mashhad railway line, which is to be linked with Bandar Abbas rail track, will shorten the distance between the two countries by 950 kilometers. The route is vital for expansion of economic cooperation as well as transit of goods, he said.
Given the two sides outlooks in economy, transportation, transit of goods, mutual cooperation in Caspian Sea affairs, infrastructure projects as well as benefiting from common waterways, it is expected that the current relations between the two countries will further broaden, Khorram said.
In case, Iran-Turkmen economic commission becomes more active, 'we can witness a fundamental breakthrough in expansion of cooperation in gas, oil, petrochemical, transportations and commerce in the future', Khorram said.
On oil and petrochemical projects, he said construction of Turkmen pipeline to Iran, export of Turkmen oil to Kazakhstan and construction of petrochemical unit in Turkmenistan are among the projects which can guarantee economic interests of both states.
Deputy head of Turkmen cabinet on oil and gas affairs who is co-chairing the economic commission said that the two sides should strive to increase their annual trade exchanges to dlrs one billion.
Turkmenistan is ready to cooperate with the Islamic Republic of Iran to help remove all barriers to the expansion of economic cooperation, he said.
At the meeting, Khorram called for formation of executive committees in charge of transportation, telecommunications, oil, gas, energy, commerce and banking which was welcomed by Turkmen delegation.
Level of trade exchange between Iran and Turkmenistan stood dlrs 600 million last year.
The eighth Iran-Turkmen economic commission meeting began here Saturday to examine ways of expanding mutual economic and trade ties. The meeting will mainly focus on bilateral relations in the field of energy, industries, banking, transport, trade and proper use of water.
Deputy head of Turkmen cabinet on oil and gas affairs has undertaken co-chairmanship of the joint economic commission. During the two-day meeting, the two sides would study avenues to further expand economic cooperation between the two countries.
Iran-Turkmenistan economic commission meetings contribute to bolstering economic and trade cooperation as well as resolving the current economic problems.
Friendship Dam, Sarakhs-Mashhad rail track as well as transfer of electricity and gas are among Iran-Turkmenistan joint projects. The seventh Iran-Turkmenistan joint economic commission was held in Ashkabad in 2002.
