Tehran's Cab Drivers Complain about Quality and Repair Costs of New Domesic Autos

Source: Radio Farda Newsroom

July 31, 2004 - Nearly half of the old Paykan sedans used in Tehran as taxicabs have been replaced with newer Iran-built Sahand sedans a car built with South Korean parts, but Tehran cabbies demand higher fairs, complaining that the new cars have higher maintenance costs due to their poor quality.

A cabbie who has taken delivery of a new Sahand three months ago, tells Radio Fardas Tehran correspondent Arash Qavidel that his car burns or leaks nearly one liter of motor oil in every 1,000 kilometers, but the manufacturers mechanics told him it was normal. So, after 4,000 kilometers no motor oil would remain in the car, he complains, adding that the cars electrical distributor burnt on the second day and he had to return it to the company and wait five days for replacing the part. He says the drivers call for raising the fair is justified, since the new cars cost five times more than the old Paykan cars to maintain.
