Iranian teachers protest continued detention of colleagues

Tehran, Aug 1, IRNA -- Iranian teachers representatives from different districts of Tehran on Sunday protested continued detention of two activists campaigning for teachers' welfare.

Secretary General of Iran Teachers Association Mahmoud Beheshti Langroudi and spokesman for the nationwide association Ali Asghar Zati have been detained since July 10.

About 70 protesters coming from different parts of Tehran staged a meeting in front of Ministry of Education on Sunday calling for the immediate release of their two colleagues.

They carried placards reading 'The detained teacher should be set free', `We call for an end to discrimination`, `Two members of Teachers Association should be out soon'.

Member of Board of Directors of Iran Teachers Association Mohammad Khaksari told IRNA, "This way of dealing with teachers is not right. Those putting pressure on teachers will get nothing.

"There is no justification for detention of Mr. Beheshti and Mr. Zati. They should be released soon or their possible charge be examined by court of justice soon," Khaksari said.
